[no title – first line]
I chose her
and she never knew
all that it contained; to choose
to recognize beauty
in things less beautiful
to find one’s self within
the turn of an awkward face
a too thin body
or an animal while it dies
I gave myself to these without trying
it is as I am to save by joining
to love by sacrifice
you were one of these, a boy
who wanted nothing but
a life to give to
a woman’s body to stay awhile before you
let you think and memorize the form
you did
and never again will I be immortal
the countless sketches
the hours spent
I held more color by your eyes
than I will ever hold again
